  • Bad system, worse app

    By GusSnarp (Pcmac user)

this app itself is a poorly designed system that attempts to turn what ought to be like a project management system into a friendly Facebook like interface, resulting in a system that is bad at being either. It is confusing and difficult for students and parents to navigate and actually know what needs to be done when. This is largely because it doesn’t enforce any standardized input from teachers, because it isolated courses from each other too much, and for parents, because they have to navigate to each student and then within each student to each course in a way that far too often requires two steps. For example, clicking on “courses” seems to open a page, but it’s really just a modal. So the user thinks that after selecting a course, they can click back to get to the courses list. Instead, you go back to the page before. The iOS app makes all this worse because it’s not a true native app, it’s a custom web browser that wraps the website. It cannot, however, display certain kinds of content internally like the website can. It tells you the content is unavailable. Most of it you can actually get to if you zoom in and find the external link, but this is very poor UI design. I would recommend school systems not spend the enormous amount of money this system must cost. As for the rest of us - we’re stuck with the schools’ bad decision, but you’re slightly better off going to a computer and avoiding the app whenever possible.
  • This “app” is just a website

By Create Nickname. Okay. (Pcmac user)

The this app website may be decent for helping kids access materials for classes, but this “app” is terrible for parents. First off, it is not an app, just the website running in a browser. When I go to open a .doc file listed in one of my kids’ classes, the “app” says I can only open that file in the app, and has a link to download the app, which opens the App Store web page inside this browser masquerading as an app. Ridiculous. In addition, this app as a service/website/app is generally unfriendly to navigate. When I open the app it tells me that I am not enrolled in any courses. Of course not, I’m the parent! Then I have to go into menus to switch the whole thing to view it as if I was one of my kids. If I signed up for this app as a parent, why have any of that extra junk in there? I’m not suddenly going to enroll in high school courses! Just give me a drop down menu at the very beginning to choose which kid’s classes I want to look at. I am very glad my school district uses PowerSchool to handle grades and attendance. That is an actual app that is actually easy to use. If all this app can do is show me the filenames of files available to my kids, but not actually open any files, then it really doesn’t have a point to exist.
  • Poorly optimized for a phone app

    By Personnnnnnnnnnnnnn (Pcmac user)

The idea of this app is great and the website works great on the computer, but this app is not ideal. Thee are some things about it that just don’t make sense. For example the wifi in my school is a bit spotty and when I go in and out of it while opening the app it just logs me out and even if I reopen the app while in the wifi it still makes me login again. Also when I post something in my club’s this app group there are formatting issues that don’t appear on the website. It doesn’t register when I make a new line by pressing [enter]. It shows while I’m typing but when I post it there is no mew line. This is really frustrating. I also can’t access my bio where you select type of learner, change name, etc. from the app whereas you can from the website. Also my profile picture shows up upside down for some reason. No idea why since it’s right side up on the computer. I still use the app since it’s better than going on Safari but it’s really a pain.
  • A headache to try to use

    By coolmama3 (Pcmac user)

I took me 2 days to figure out how to switch between my students. Oh, it's not under the 'my children' tab. There isn't anything under there, actually. Nothing is found easily. My son is at the high school now & I haven't figured out how to add the new campus to my 'buildings' list. Nope, it doesn't automatically happen. I have all notifications set to 'on' for email & app notifications & I have yet to receive one. There is no 'parent view' to be able to see what is going on in chronological order. You have to view each item as your student. So you have to check each class, for each student. And the 'courses' tab does not scroll down so you can actually only see the top 5 courses. So I hope you don't need those other 2 for anything!! I hated this app last year & now that my kids are at different campuses I hate it even more!! The website is less ridiculous, but seriously, why have an app at all if it's such a pile of 💩?? I'm on an iPhone X with the latest operating system & my app is updated. Stick with the website if you must use this app.
